Hazardous waste is any household item that is labelled corrosive, flammable, poisonous or explosive. These items are often harmful to the environment and should be disposed of safely; they should never be placed in waste or recycling bins.
The mobile household hazardous waste unit rotates between the Durham and Bentinck landfills. The mobile household hazardous waste unit is available at each location for a period of three months before moving on to the next location. The unit is open during the facility's regular operating hours, but closes 30 minutes before the site.
There is no charge to drop off household hazardous waste materials; however, there is a material limit of 50 litres per visit and you must complete the Household Hazardous Waste Resident Form and provide it to the site attendant.

- Materials will be accepted from West Grey residents only. Residents will be asked for proof of address before they drop off materials.
- All residents must complete the Household Hazardous Waste Resident Form and provide it to the site attendant.
- All materials must be clearly labeled and in securely sealed containers.
- There is a material limit of 20 litres per container and 50 litres per visit.
- Staff will stop receiving household hazardous waste materials half an hour before closing to allow attendants sufficient time to properly package materials and close the bin.
- Empty dry metal paint cans with lids removed are accepted into the scrap metal pile at the Bentinck and Durham landfills. Empty dry plastic and metal combination cans with lids off are considered garbage.
- If you are only looking to dispose of paint cans please note that paint cans can also be taken to RONA during their regular business hours.
- For large loads or business inquiries please contact Nicole Heber, Environmental Officer at 519-369-2200 ext. 252 or email environment@westgrey.com.

Sharps and medical waste
Medical sharps include needles, syringes and lancets. It is essential that sharp objects are disposed of using safe practices to reduce the risk of injury to the public and to municipal employees.
Never dispose of medication down the toilet or sink, or throw it out in the garbage. These practices may have a harmful effect on the environment. Please return medications/pharmaceuticals to pharmacies.
