Accessibility committee
West Grey is a member municipality of the joint accessibility advisory committee in Grey County. This group is dedicated to removing barriers to municipal government and advocates for accessible buildings and spaces across Grey County.
As a rule, half of the membership for both committees are made up of people with disabilities.
Multi-year Accessibility Plan
In 2020, council adopted a multi-year accessibility plan to promote the core principles of accessibility: dignity, independence, integration and equal opportunity in West Grey.
Grey County's multi-year accessibility plan (2018-2022) sets out strategies for identifying, removing and preventing barriers that challenge people with disabilities from fully participating in society. The plan also identifies the way Grey County will be compliant with the rules and standards of the Ontarians with Disabilities Act and Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act.
Website Accessibility
The Municipality of West Grey is committed to providing a website that is accessible and usable by all citizens. We strive to meet or exceed industry best practices.
The municipal website has been designed to be WCAG 2.0 level AA compliant and meets the Province of Ontario's Accessible Information and Communications Standard (Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005).
The municipality aims to ensure the website is:
Perceivable
- Ability to provide text alternatives for any non-text content.
- Site designed using CSS allowing for content to be compatible with screen readers
- Use of ALT tags and title tags
- Text size - increase and decrease
Operable
- Supports users who navigate via keyboard – i.e. using the Tab key instead of mouse
- Proper use of colour which takes into account colour blindness
- Multiple ways to navigate and find content – Search, Quick Links & Navigation
Robust
- Compatible with screen readers and cross browser compatible
- Scalable for future standards
Exceptions
Pursuant to O. Reg. 191/11 Integrated Accessibility Standards section 14(5)
The municipality recognizes situations where it is not practicable to present content in an accessible format. In these cases, best efforts are used to provide citizens an accessible alternative or assistance in acquiring the information they need.
Please contact the Clerk’s Department at 519-369-2200 ext. 229 if you need assistance in obtaining an accessible alternative for non-accessible content.
Examples of such exceptions include:
- Mapping or GIS data
- Engineering drawings or complex technical data
- Some financial report formats as prepared in iCity software
- Legacy applications or data that cannot be updated or cannot be updated with reasonable effort/expenses.
- Content that cannot be rendered accessible without significant impact.
