Joining hundreds of communities across Canada, and in response to West Grey’s declaration of a climate emergency, West Grey is developing a municipal climate change action plan (CCAP) to address climate change locally and in its operations. A community survey will be open until June 24, 2022 inviting citizens to provide input and comments as part of the plan development.
“The impacts of climate change are being felt across the country as well as right here at home,” said Mayor Christine Robinson. “Developing a West Grey climate change action plan will help the municipality become more energy efficient, save on the cost of energy and contribute to the overall health of our community.”
West Grey’s plan will focus on five key theme areas: municipal buildings, vehicle fleet, solid waste, behaviour change and alignment with the Grey County Community CCAP. West Grey’s plan has three important goals:
- To capture West Grey’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions today and focus on strategies to reduce emissions now and in the future regarding municipal services, fleet, public spaces and municipal buildings, etc.
- To establish a strategic and comprehensive set of actions to effectively manage energy consumption, transition to low-carbon technologies, and reduce solid waste across municipal operations and facilities.
- To provide direction on integrating with and supporting the Grey County CCAP which focuses on reducing emissions in the community.
The survey includes questions about actions that the municipality can take to become more energy efficient, transition to low-carbon technologies, reduce waste, advance nature-based solutions, and collaborate with neighbouring communities. Information gathered from the survey will help West Grey prioritize action and inform the types of strategies to be included within the plan.
Background
Planning for this project started in October 2021 and since then, West Grey has finalized the GHG inventory for municipal operations and has started collecting input from council, staff, and the Climate Action Advisory Committee to determine the overall vision, objectives, and actions for the plan. A crucial next component in this process is to engage community stakeholders and members of the public through an online survey, however, surveys can be provided in alternate formats by calling the municipal office at 519 369 2200 ext. 229.
To complete this work, West Grey is working with ICLEI Canada, a national non-profit organization whose mission is to build and serve a worldwide movement of local and regional governments that are committed to achieving tangible improvements in local sustainability and resilience. ICLEI Canada is providing technical consulting, project management, and stakeholder engagement to build capacity, share knowledge, and support the implementation of local climate change mitigation.
