WEST GREY, ON — Over 1,200 votes were cast in the “build-a-banner” contest held through July and August for the public to choose from 25 original artwork designs. The contest invited artists to submit designs and asked voters to choose one design for spring and one design for fall. The artistic banners will complement the new West Grey logo banners that will be installed seasonally in Ayton, Durham, Elmwood and Neustadt.
“This was a fun, collaborative approach to include citizens in deciding on banner designs for our downtown areas,” said Mayor Christine Robinson. “The banner program is one part of a bigger downtown revitalization program and will ensure our downtowns are decorated year-round.”
Funded in part through a Rural Economic Development grant from the provincial government, West Grey has allocated $35,910.83 to new benches, waste bins, bike racks and banners. The Durham BIA is also a contributing partner.
The fall banner was designed by Gary McLaughlin, and the fall cottage scene is indicative of many areas of West Grey, speaking to the seasonal beauty in the municipality.
The spring banner is a playful image submitted by Amanda and David Butchart, whose photo captured their son, Jack, and a very curious, friendly deer.
The winning artists each received a complimentary banner. The banners are in production now and will be installed in Spring 2022.
