WEST GREY, ON – Work to replace the box culvert on Garafraxa Street in downtown Durham, between South Street and Saddler Street, will begin next week. Road closures will be in effect from October 4 and the project is expected to last for a month.
Two separate detour routes – one for local traffic and cyclists and the other for commercial trucks and heavy vehicles – are planned.
Local traffic will be rerouted from Garafraxa Street, along South Street West to Queen Street South, then to Saddler Street West and back to Garafraxa Street. Commercial trucks and heavy traffic will be rerouted from Garafraxa Street, along Douglas Street to Concession 2 WGR and then to Hutton Hill Road to Grey Road 4 and back to Garafraxa Street. Detour maps will be available on the municipal website at westgrey.com
Downtown businesses will still be open throughout the construction project. Motorists are reminded to proceed with caution through the construction zone and be mindful of work crews.
At a cost of $406,400, this is an extensive capital project and part of the province’s Connecting Link funding program. Work includes the excavation and replacement of the box culvert, and reconstruction of the roadway located on Garafraxa Street South, south of Saddler Street East.
The Connecting Link program, funded through the Ministry of Transportation, helps municipalities repair roadways and bridges that connect two ends of a provincial highway that run through communities or to a border crossing. West Grey has a second Connecting Link project for the Garafraxa Street Bridge, which is approved to proceed in 2022.
