FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WEST GREY, ON – The Rockwood Terrace long-term care development project is steadily moving forward with the approval of an early works tender. West Grey council authorized Grey County to award the West Grey portion of the early works tender at a council meeting on September 5, 2023. Grey County council has awarded the early works tender to JT Excavating Ltd. Early works includes leveling the property, servicing the site with water, sanitary sewer and stormwater infrastructure to meet current and future needs, and creating new roadways for the project site. This project is a collaboration with Grey County and costs will be shared with West Grey paying approximately $700,000 and Grey County contributing $2,575,000.
Mayor Kevin Eccles expressed his enthusiasm for the project’s progress, stating: “It’s wonderful to see this project hit the ground. This is an important investment that will benefit the residents of West Grey and Grey County for years to come.”
In addition to approving the early works tender, West Grey council also authorized the mayor and clerk to enter an infrastructure, responsibility and cost sharing agreement with Grey County for the reconstruction or extension of Rock Street, Kincardine Street, Elgin Street and South Street. This agreement paves the way for the construction of roads on Grey County lands that will be conveyed to West Grey upon completion.
Council directed staff to bring budget requests forward in the coming years for engineering and design work for the reconstruction of South Street from Elgin to Albert Street and installation of a storm sewer, sanitary sewer and water main and an upgrade to the storm water management system on South Street from Garafraxa Street to Queen Street.
Early work is scheduled to commence this fall and will be completed in two phases. Phase one will prepare the site for the general contractor and is expected to last until May 2024. The second phase will take place after the building construction and will focus on pavement and sidewalks around the site. Construction of the home is anticipated to begin in the spring of 2024 and will continue until the summer of 2026.
