On Friday July 21, 2023, a site user deposited some hot coals that were covered with grass into the compost area at the Durham landfill. This action could have caused a serious incident given the mixture of hot conditions and fuel sources at the landfill site. Fortunately, staff were able to quickly extinguish the fire and prevent serious damage.
West Grey would like to remind residents that all waste must be presented to staff for inspection and our landfill sites do not accept hot coals, ashes or embers. For questions on what is accepted at our landfill sites, please contact the municipal office at 519-369-2200.
Remove ashes safely by allowing them to cool fully before cleaning them from a fireplace, wood stove or barbeque. Use only metal, non-combustible containers to remove and store ashes. Take ashes outside immediately and store them well away from buildings or combustible materials. For more information on fire safety, please contact West Grey Fire Services at 519-369-2505.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
