Swimming

The Municipality of West Grey offers public swim sessions that provide open access to our pools, along with certified swimming lessons for beginners, intermediates, and advanced swimmers. Our experienced instructors focus on water safety, technique, and building swimmers' skills in a supportive, fun environment.

The Municipality of West Grey provides public swimming at the Durham Wading Pool, along with swimming lessons available at both the Durham Wading Pool and the Middle Dam.

Hours of operation:

Daytime hours: Monday to Friday 2:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. 

Evening hours: Monday and Thursday 6:45 p.m. - 7:45 p.m.

Public swims at the Durham Wading Pool are free to the public.

The Municipality of West Grey offers swimming lessons at the Durham Wading Pool and the Middle Dam. 

We are committed to providing high-quality, safe, and fun swimming instruction for all ages and skill levels. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to refine your technique, our programs are designed to help swimmers of all ages develop essential skills in and around the water.

How to Register: You can register for swimming lessons online through online portal or by contacting the Municipal office directly. 

We offer multiple sessions throughout the summer with varying class schedules. Each session has different dates and times for each lesson group.

Session 1: June 30, 2025 until July 11, 2025 (No class on July 1, 2025)

  • 10 a.m. – Swimmer 1, Swimmer 2, Private
  • 10:30 a.m. – Preschool A, Preschool B, Swimmer 1, Swimmer 2
  • 11 a.m. – Preschool C, Preschool D, Preschool E

Session 2: July 14, 2025 until July 24, 2025

Parent and Tot 1: 1 Parent/Guardian is required in the water with their child. With a caregiver, the child will explore the water through buoyancy, movement skills, introduction to PFD's and entries. Learn how to help your child play in the water with comfort and confidence. 

Parent and Tot 2: 1 Parent/Guardian is required in the water with their child. With caregiver, the child will perform assisted front and back floats, learn how to travel at the surface by kicking, introduction to entries with a PFD. This level teaches children to get their face wet and blow bubbles. 

Parent and Tot 3: 1 Parent/Guardian is required in the water with their child. With a caregiver, the child will have fun jumping into the water with assistance. They learn to hold their breath and open their eyes under water. Kicking on front and back provide the building blocks for orientation and stroke development. 

Preschool A (3-5yrs): Preschoolers develop a foundation of water skills with the Instructors. Swimmers jump into chest-deep water assisted. Floating on front and back, and glides with assistance for 3 seconds. Shallow water movement wearing a PFD. Fitness swim 1-2m assisted. 

Preschool B (3-5yrs): Preschoolers jump into chest-deep water and get in and out wearing a PFD. They submerge and exhale under water. They glide on front and back 3m and with a buoyant aid will flutter kick 5m. Fitness swim 2-4m unassisted. 

Preschool C (3-5yrs): Preschoolers try both a jump and a side roll into deep water while wearing a PFD. They recover objects from the bottom in waist-deep water. They work on kicking and gliding through the water on front and back unassisted. Fitness swim 5-7m unassisted. 

Preschool D (3-5yrs): Preschoolers jump into deep water, recover objects from the bottom in chest-deep water and are introduced to front crawl 2-3m. Fitness swim 7-9m unassisted. 

Preschool E (3-5yrs): Preschoolers Demonstrate a forward roll entry into deep water with PFD, practice holding breath underwater for up to 10 seconds and are introduced to interval training and whip kick. Fitness swim 10-12m unassisted. 

Swimmer 1 (6+ yrs): Beginners become comfortable jumping into water with and without a personal flotation device. They open their eyes, exhale and hold their breath under water. They work on floats, glides and kicking on front and back. 

Swimmer 2 (6+ yrs): Advanced beginners jump into chest deeper water, and become comfortable falling sideways into the water wearing a personal flotation device. Swimmers support themselves at the surface without an aid, recover an object in chest-deep water. Fitness swim 10-15m. 

Swimmer 3: Swimmers develop front and back crawl strokes and explore whip kick in a vertical position. Swimmers tread water for up to 30 sec and interval training with flutter kick. Fitness swim is 20-25m. 

Swimmer 4: Swimmers work towards stride dives and standing dives into deep water. They improve the front crawl, back crawl and whip kick, transition from front to back flutter kick and are introduced to a 3m underwater swim. Fitness swim is 50m. 

Swimmer 5: Swimmers shallow dive into deep water and perform in-water front somersaults. They achieve the Canadian Swim to Survive Standard: roll into deep water and tread water for 1 min. They increase distance and efficiency in front crawl, back crawl and whip kick. Fitness swim 100m. 

Swimmer 6: Swimmers increase efficiency in front crawl, back crawl, and whip kick. They are introduced to a 5m under water swim and breaststroke arms learning breath control. They are also introduced to dolphin kick, and are introduced to front crawl sprints. Fitness swim 150m. 

Swimmer 7 (6+ yrs): Master dolphin kick, diving off blocks and the eggbeater. Introduced to sculling and maximize efficiency in front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke. Fitness swim 300m. 

Swimmer 8 (8+ yrs): Swimmers rise to challenge of advanced aquatic skills by doing head and foot first surface dives, length swims and 25m obstacle swim, and first aid including assessment of conscious victims, contacting EMS and treatment for bleeding. They swim lengths of front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke. Fitness swim is 350m. 

Swimmer 9 (8+ yrs): Swimmers continue stroke development with 75m swims of front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke. Lifesaving skills and first aid including assessment of unconscious victims, treatment for shock and obstructed airway procedures. Fitness swim 500m. 

Swimmer 10 (8yrs + ): Advanced swimmers develop strokes over a 100m swim each stroke. They also build on lifesaving skills and first aid including treatment of bone and joint injuries and respiratory emergencies. Develops strong lifesaving foundation. Fitness swim 600m.
