R Zone

The Municipality of West Grey is committed to fostering an environment where there is Respect for yourself; Respect for others; and Responsibility for your actions.

The Municipality of West Grey will exercise no tolerance for any form of violence, vandalism, or inappropriate behaviour in its programs, facilities or properties.

This policy details the actions and enforcement procedures that will be implemented to address complaints of inappropriate behavior. It outlines the steps for corrective action or the temporary removal of individuals from municipal premises, in accordance with this policy and the Municipality of West Grey Workplace Violence and Harassment Policy.

Over the past several years, incidents of bullying, violence, vandalism, and discriminatory behavior have unfortunately increased. Before the implementation of R Zone, there was no municipal by-law or policy that gave staff clear direction and authority to address issues that were not outright criminal behaviors requiring police involvement. R Zone plays a key role in fostering safer, healthier, and more respectful recreational environments.

The objective of the R Zone policy is to create a positive, safe, and supportive atmosphere across all buildings, programs, and operations within the Municipality of West Grey.

The 'R' in R Zone represents three key principles:

  1. Respect for yourself
  2. Respect for others
  3. Responsibility for your actions

The R Zone logo serves as a reminder to both staff and the public that this policy is in effect and applies to everyone, including participants, officials, spectators, visitors, parents, and staff.

Any form of violence, vandalism, or inappropriate behavior is strictly prohibited on municipal properties, facilities, or within programs. Incidents that should be reported include:

  • Verbal or physical assault
  • Harassment, threats, or aggression
  • Illegal consumption of alcohol or drugs
  • Vandalism or theft
  • Possession of weapons
  • Attempts to provoke or incite anger in others
  • Violations of municipal by-laws, policies, or procedures
  • Inappropriate social media posts

For the most effective response, reports should be submitted within 24 hours of the incident.

How can I report an incident?

If you are involved in or witness an incident at a municipal facility and a staff member is present, you can report it directly to the staff member. With your assistance, they will complete an incident report. If the incident occurs at an outdoor facility without staff present and involves a community organization, report it to the organization in charge. Alternatively, you can file a report online, print one below, or email it to info@westgrey.com.

What happens once a report has been made?

Regardless of whether the report is made in person, through an organization, or online, Municipal staff will log the report and either handle it directly or forward it to the appropriate group or organization for follow-up.

Each report will be reviewed individually, and the level of discipline will be determined based on the severity of the situation.

If I report an incident, will it be kept confidential?

Yes, the Municipality will protect confidentiality in accordance with the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA).
