Applications, Licenses, and Permits

Applications for West Grey building permits and inspections can be made online through Cloudpermit. The Cloudpermit platform allows you to apply and to see the status of your permit at any time. 

First-time users must create an account by registering with an email address and agreeing to the Terms of Service. For more information, please visit our Building and Renovating page.

To obtain a burn permit, you need to call 519-369-2505 or visit the West Grey Fire Department at 179 George Street West in Durham.

A permit is required for any fire larger than two feet in diameter. The fee is $20 per month or $220 for the entire year.

Permits must be obtained at least one hour before starting the fire.

To obtain a civic address sign, please complete the request form or contact the Department of Infrastructure and Public Works via 519-369-2200 ext. 225 or email.

All dogs in West Grey require dog tags, which must be purchased at the municipal office.

Dog tags are permanent but the annual fee must be paid each year. This program works with dog owners to promote responsible dog ownership and provide a useful tool in case a dog goes missing.

Fees are due each year by March 31 and cost more depending on how many dogs are owned.

Before March 31: 

  • First dog: $25
  • Second dog: $35
  • Third dog: $45
  • Fourth dog + additional dogs after: $55

After March 31: 

  • First dog: $30
  • Second dog: $40
  • Third dog: $50
  • Fourth dog + additional dogs after: $60

There is a $85 reclamation fee for any dog. Unpaid tags will be added to tax bills. Tags are not transferable between municipalities.

To obtain an entrance permit, download and complete the entrance permit form and email it to us. Please note, a permit is required to create a new entrance to a property.

If the entrance is on a Grey County road, you will need to submit a request to the County.

Kennel licence application forms can be obtained online, at the municipal office, or by calling 519-369-2200 ext. 243.

All kennels in West Grey require a valid municipal licence and must pay an annual application fee of $150 fee before March 31, or $200 after March 31.

Applications for a licence to manage or conduct a lottery can be found online.

Applications for a marriage licence may be downloaded and printed from the Ontario government's website and brought to the West Grey municipal office for processing.

The Municipality of West Grey oversees the regulation of refreshment vehicles, commonly referred to as food trucks, through bylaw 38-2020.

Operators can apply for either temporary or permanent licenses.

  • Temporary Licenses: These are valid for one week at a single location and cost $100.
  • Permanent Licenses: These are valid annually and cost $300. A permanent license may cover multiple locations.

To amend the location of a permanent license, please contact us. A fee of $50 is required for any amendments.

Each vehicle must have its own individual license.

Most applications require supporting documents, including:

  • A public health report
  • A propane certificate
  • Property owner consent
  • A photo of the vehicle

Special event permits are necessary for any event that requires a road closure, taking over public spaces, or hosting festivals and shows.

To request a special event road permit, please complete an application for municipal or county roads. If you have any questions about municipal road closure requests, please contact the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure via 519-369-2200 ext. 225 or email.

It's important to apply well in advance.

To apply for a trailer permit in West Grey, complete the online application.

The following information is required for your application:

  • A detailed site plan showing the proposed location of the trailer
  • Setbacks of the trailer from the lot lines
  • Contact information and proof of ownership

Trailers require a permit and must have an approved civic address for emergency purposes. Please note that mobile homes or park model trailers are not permitted as trailers. Additional details can be found in the Trailer Licence Bylaw.

The annual fee is $1,000.
