Winter Precautions to Help Keep Lines from Freezing

Residents who use the municipal water system should take precautions to protect water lines from freezing. Damage to water lines or meters due to freezing is the homeowner's responsibility.

Some tips to help prevent freezing:

  • Ensure the area around the water meter is kept heated and protected from freezing. Homeowners are responsible for any damage to private water lines or meters.
  • If you are not a permanent resident, make sure your home remains above freezing and that someone regularly checks the heat.
  • Keep natural snow cover around water lines buried underground and near the outside wall where the lines enter the home, as it helps insulate the ground from the cold.
  • Run the cold water tap (the one closest to where the water enters the home) wide open for 5 to 10 minutes just before bed and again first thing in the morning. This helps clear any developing slush at the curb stop or in the service line.

By taking these steps, water system users can help avoid costly repairs and ensure their water system continues to function smoothly during the winter months.
