Building and Renovating

The Building Department is responsible for ensuring that all construction projects comply with the Ontario Building Code, along with other local regulations such as the Municipality's Building Bylaw and Zoning Bylaw.

A building permit is mandatory to ensure construction meets the required standards of the Building Code. Throughout the construction process, regular inspections must be carried out.

For new builds and most renovation projects, Energy Efficiency forms must be completed and submitted as part of the building permit application.

The Building Code Act requires a building permit for the construction and demolition of any structure, which results in a building area of over 10 m2 (107 ft2) including additions, alterations, and renovations. All plumbing requires permits.

A shed is exempt from the requirement to obtain a permit under section 8 of the Building Code Act and is exempt from compliance with this Code, provided that the shed;

  • is not more than 15 m2 in gross area,
  • is not more than one storey in building height,
  • is not attached to a building or any other structure,
  • is used only for storage purposes ancillary to a principal building on the lot, and
  • does not have plumbing.

If you are unsure if you require a building permit, contact the Building Department for more information.

Permit Process

The Municipality is required to adhere to specific timelines for processing permits and conducting inspections. Our building inspectors follow these regulations carefully, but delays often occur when required documents are pending from applicants. Timely submission of all necessary materials is essential to avoid disruptions and ensure the permit process and inspections are completed on schedule. Please see the below chart outlining the steps involved in the process from application to permit closure.
