The Municipality of West Grey has selected to use the internet and telephone voting method for the 2018 municipal election. Paper ballots will not be used. Mail-in ballots will not be used.

Electors will receive a notice in the mail providing instructions and a secure PIN number to use to vote by either the internet or telephone. Electors are encouraged to vote using either the internet or telephone up to ten days in advance of election day on October 22, 2018. There is no need to wait to vote on election day as there will be no polls.

A help desk will be available at the municipal office to provide assistance.

Are you on the list to vote for the upcoming municipal election?

It is the responsibility of the Elector to ensure they are a qualified elector.

You can confirm your information by contacting the municipal office by email at election@westgrey.com or by phone at 1-800-538-9647 or 519-369-2200. If you are not on the list you will be required to visit the municipal office in person with proper ID. A form WGEL18 Amend Voters' List will need to be filled out in person. 
If you have not received a letter prior to the commencement of the voting period on October 12, 2018, you will have to attend (in person) the Municipal office or one of the Help Centres during the voting period October 12 to the 22nd. You will be provided with a letter with a new PIN and Voter ID. 

Acceptable documents for voter identification

You must present 1 of the following documents showing your name and address:

  • Ontario driver’s licence
  • Ontario Photo Card
  • Ontario motor vehicle permit (vehicle portion)
  • cancelled personalized cheque
  • mortgage statement, lease or rental agreement relating to property in Ontario insurance policy or insurance statement
  • loan agreement or other financial agreement with a financial institutiondocument issued or certified by a court in Ontario
  • any other document from the government of Canada, Ontario or a municipality in Ontario or from an agency or such a governmentany document from a Band Council in Ontario established under the Indian Act(Canada)
  • income tax assessment notice
  • child tax benefit statement
  • statement of employment insurance benefits paid T4E
  • statement of old age security T4A (OAS)
  • statement of Canada Pension Plan benefits T4A (P)
  • Canada Pension Plan statement of contributions
  • statement of direct deposit for Ontario Works
  • statement of direct deposit for Ontario Disability Support ProgramWorkplace Safety and Insurance Board statement of benefits T5007
  • property tax assessment
  • credit card statement, bank account statement, or RRSP, RRIF, RHOSP or T5 statement
  • CNIB Card or a card from another registered charitable organization that provides services to persons with disabilities
  • hospital card or record
  • document showing campus residence, issued by the office or officials responsible for student residence at a post-secondary institution
  • document showing residence at a long-term care home under the Long-Term Care Homes Act, 2007, issued by the Administrator for the home
  • utility bill for hydro, water, gas, telephone or cable TV or a bill from a public utilities commission
  • cheque stub, T4 statement or pay receipt issued by an employer
  • transcript or report card from a post-secondary school

Eligibility to Vote:

To be an eligible elector in the Municipality of West Grey, you have to be:

  • A Canadian citizen;
  • At least 18 years of age;
  • Reside in the Municipality of West Grey or be an owner or tenant of  property or land in the Municipality of West Grey, or the spouse of an owner or tenant in the Municipality of West Grey; and;
  • Not be prohibited from voting under any laws , nor prohibited from voting because he or she:
    • Is serving a sentence of imprisonment
    • Is a corporation
    • Is acting as an executor or trustee or in any other representative capacity
    • Was convicted of a corrupt practice described in Section 90(3) of the Municipal Elections Act

  1. one (1) to be elected by all electors in the Municipality of West Grey

Deputy Mayor

  1. one (1) to be elected by all electors in the Municipality of West Grey

Councillor

  1. five (5) to be elected by all electors in the Municipality of West Grey

English Language Public School Board Trustee ( please note: A By-election will take place in West Grey & Hanover for Bluewater District School Board Trustee (English Public-School Board Trustee)

  1. one (1) to be elected by all English language public school board electors in the Municipality of West Grey and Town of Hanover

English Language Separate School Board Trustee

  1. one (1) to be elected by all English language separate school board electors in the Municipality of West Grey, Town of Hanover, Municipality of Grey Highlands, and Township of Southgate

French Language Public School Board Trustee

  1. one (1) to be elected by all French language public school board electors in the Counties of Bruce, Grey, Simcoe and Dufferin

French Language Separate School Board Trustee

  1. one (1) to be elected by all French language separate school board electors in the Counties of Oxford, Perth and Grey

Tuesday, May 1, 2018 Nomination Period Commences, s.33.
Monday, June 4, 2018 Municipal enumeration forms to be returned to MPAC to ensure inclusion of electors on preliminary list of electors (PLE).
Friday, July 27, 2018 Nomination Day (9:00am to 2:00pm)
Withdrawal of nominations before 2:00pm
Monday, July 30, 2018 Certification of nomination papers before 4:00pm
Acclamations after 4:00pm 
July 31 - September 1, 2018 Receipt of PLE from MPAC on a date between July 31 and September 1 of an election year as agreed upon by the Clerk and MPAC.
September 15 - 25, 2018 Prepare and distribute interim list of changes to Voters' List.
Friday, October 12, 2018 Online Voting begins at 10:00 am & continues through to Monday, October 22,  2018 at 8:00 pm.
Monday, October 22, 2018 Voting closes at 8:00 pm.
Tuesday, October 23, 2017 Clerk to declare official election results as soon as possible after voting day.
Monday, December 3, 2018 Term of office commences, s.6.
New coundil deemed organized when quorum of members have taken declaraton of office.
Monday, December 31, 2018 Campaign period ends, s.88.24(1-2).

Nomination Period

Please contact the Office of the Clerk to book an appointment to file your nomination papers or to register as a third party candidate. 

Tuesday, May 1, 2018 to Friday, July 27, 2018
Nomination forms may be filed by candidates prior to Nomination Day, at any time when the City Clerk's office is open (Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.), exclusive of statutory holidays.

On Nomination Day, July 27, 2018, nomination forms may be filed between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Change Office - Last day for candidates to withdraw from one office, and file a nomination for another office

Withdrawal of Nomination - Last day for withdrawing a nomination. Nominations may be withdrawn by the candidate, or his/her agent, by filing the withdrawal in writing with the City Clerk before 2:00 p.m. If the withdrawal is filed by an agent, it must be accompanied by written authorization provided by the candidate.

NOTE: A new change has been implemented for the 2018 Municipal Election under the Municipal Elections Modernization Act (MEMA). Candidates seeking office for Municipal Council will have to have their nomination paper endorsed by at least 25 individuals who are eligible to vote within the Municipality of West Grey and are due at the time of nomination.
